Read an essay called "My Mexico"

Although I am the author of three novels, I also write short stories and the occasional nonfiction piece.  I began writing stories when I was 29 (I'm a relatively late bloomer).  My short fiction has been published in anthologies, magazines, and literary journals. Some of them appear in Ernie's Ark, my book of connected stories.

You can find my short stories in the following anthologies:

  • What Are You Looking At?
  • The Pushcart Prize Anthology 1999
  • Sudden Fiction International
  • Best American Mystery Stories 1997 and 2003
  • Show Me a Hero: Stories of Sport
  • Twenty Timeless Stories
  • Fiction's Many Worlds
  • Splash: An International Literary Anthology
  • The Short Story
  • 2000
  • Four-Minute Fictions
  • The Quotable Moose
  • . . . and many others

My stories have also appeared in the following magazines:
